Two More Bodies Found In Mexico Oil Rig Accident; Toll At 21
October 31, 2007
Authorities found the bodies of two more oil rig workers who jumped into the Gulf of Mexico out of fear following a gas leak on their platform, Mexican state oil firm Pemex said Friday. The discovery brings the death toll from Tuesday’s accident to 21. Most of the victims died drowning.
The two bodies were found during an “intense day” of searches in the Gulf’s Campeche Sound, Pemex said in a statement.
Authorities found 18 bodies on Wednesday and one on Thursday. Two people are still missing, while 63 workers survived.
Powerful winds and huge waves pushed the Usumacinta platform into a complex of valves on Tuesday, triggering a gas leak that caused panic among the workers who hurled themselves into the sea instead of boarding life boats, a company spokesman said.
